Daniel Pöppelmann House: history and art
The museum complex consists of the historic "Villa Schönfeld" and the extension for special exhibitions, which the architect Dieter Oesterlen designed in the 1970s.
The upper floor of the Villa Schönfeld is currently being restored in accordance with the requirements of the monument. The museum team is preparing a new, more extensive permanent exhibition on the history of Herford. The entrance area of the museum will also be renovated. Therefore the museum will remain closed until further notice.
Our construction diary provides information about the construction work and preparations for the future permanent exhibition.

You can now visit the exhibition on the history of Herford in the 19th and 20th centuries virtually.

We are renovating - historical exhibition now virtual
The upper floor of the Villa Schönfeld is being renovated in line with the preservation order and a new foyer is being built. For this reason, the Municipal Museum will remain closed until further notice.

But you can visit our permanent exhibition on the history of the 19th and 20th centuries virtually.

The picturesque museum complex on the moat consists of the Villa Schönfeld, built between 1874 and 1876, and the exhibition hall, which was built 100 years later.
The exhibition was built on the initiative of the Kunstverein to plans by the architect Dieter Oesterlen. Since 1976, the Kunstverein has presented three to four art exhibitions and several art-historical lectures each year. The Municipal Museum uses the extension for historical exhibitions.
The villa, commissioned by the textile entrepreneur Heinrich Schönfeld, moved into the Städtisches Museum in 1941 with a permanent exhibition on the history of the city.
