Today the island is a lively place of cultural research, creation and enjoyment. In winter, the surrounding lowlands were regularly flooded. Only the island, a heaped-up elevation, stood out as an island. This gave the property its name. As early as 1633, the oldest East Frisian fen settlement, later known as Groote Veen (Großefehn), developed along the canal that was driven from the Fehntjer Tief into the high moor. It was a joint venture of Emden merchants for peat extraction and marketing.
