The origins of the church can be traced back to the 16th century. Older predecessor buildings are likely. The church is dedicated to St. Anthony. Loikum became an independent Catholic parish as early as 1541, something neither Aspel nor Werth managed to achieve. This happened at the same time that the Hamminkeln community followed the teachings of Martin Luther. Two pastors worked in what is now the village until 1590/1600, then the place remained deserted and was even referred to as "Little Turkey" at the time in view of the decline in morals.

Today, the neo-Gothic St. Anthony's Church has a Romanesque baptismal font (the oldest in Hamminkeln!), several Gothic sculptures and a Baroque high altar. The latter is a very special one!

The oldest tithe list, in which the Loikumer's contributions were recorded, dates from 1325. A church account from 1565 lists the wax contributions of the Loikumer for making candles. They were used primarily for the Feast of St. Anthony and before Christmas. There were also two processions in the village, e.g. the Hilligendracht (the saint's costume), in which people walked through the fields with images of saints.

Finally, in 1760, a new young priest came from Borken: Wilhelm Rechtmann, 24 years old. He had the current rectory built. Since then, it has been inhabited continuously, always by priests. At first there was a farm area with cows, pigs and chickens. Religious refugees from Belgium and France, at times up to 15 people, also found shelter in the rectory at that time. Today, in addition to the priest's apartment, the parish hall, the parish library and the historical parish library (it even contains books from the 6th century) are housed there. This priest most likely also encouraged the revival of the shooting fraternity.

The last major renovation work took place in 1985/86. The redesign of the church square also dates from this time.

In the 14th century, a chapel stood in the Loikum farming community and was elevated to an independent parish in 1541. In 1845, the southern part of Wertherbruch and the north of Hamminkeln were incorporated into the parish. The Hamminkeln portion was assigned to the newly founded Hamminkeln parish in 1895. From 1597 to 1757, members of the Cross from Marienfrede (monastery in Dingden) served the Loikum parish. The monastery was closed in 1806. The St. Antonius parish archive covers the years 1653 to 2013.
Since December 1, 2013, the parish of St. Antonius in Loikum, together with St. Maria Himmelfahrt in Hamminkeln, St. Pankratius in Dingden, Hl. Kreuz in Mehrhoog and Christus König in Ringenberg, merged with Maria Frieden in Hamminkeln.

ORGAN: The first organ was installed in St. Antonius Church in 1782. In 1842/45 the parish purchased a new one from the organ builder Joseph Anton Breil from Dorsten. In 1924, Breil also supplied a new instrument with 11 registers, which was installed in the case from 1845. The current organ also comes from Breil and was built in 1963 and overhauled in 1984. In 2006, another general overhaul was carried out by Orgelbau Rensch from Neckar. (Source: orgelsammlung.de)
