The water tower of the former German Celluloid Factory (DCF) in Eilenburg is a 60.5 meter high water tower built in 1916 to provide process water for the former chemical plant. The water tower was built in 1915-1916 by the construction company Dykerhoff & Widmann AG (Dresden branch) as a service water storage facility and to stabilize the water pressure of the then Deutsche Celluloid-Fabrik, later Eilenburger Chemiewerk (ECW). The tower had three water tanks with a capacity of 1 × 1500 m³ and 2 × 500 m³. The tower was completed in 1916, and later rectification systems were installed in the tower shaft, which extracted the water from the technical alcohol used in drying processes. The water tower was first renovated in 1950.

In 2002/2003, the tower was again extensively renovated. The rectification systems were dismantled, the 500 m³ tank in the basement was upgraded to serve as a fire water storage facility for the neighboring industrial estate and supplemented with modern pumping technology. The reinforced concrete structure of the conical shell roof, which was in danger of collapsing and was attacked by corrosion, was replaced by a steel and wood structure, nesting places were created and antenna systems for mobile communications were installed. To receive and transmit the latter, several large slots were milled and covered in the cylindrical outer wall under the roof.[1] The lantern was rebuilt on the ground and lifted onto the conical roof with a crane. This use of the tower justified its preservation and the total cost of the renovation of 1,597,500 euros. The planning was the responsibility of the Röder (Doberschütz) engineering office. The renovation work, which was officially completed on February 24, 2004, was carried out by 18 ABM workers, coordinated by the management office of the Leipzig employment office and the construction company Dr. Waldenburger GmbH.[2][3]

The building dominates the skyline of the city of Eilenburg with its height of 60.5 meters. The water tower was built using the Intze construction method. Ten reinforced concrete columns distributed around its circumference form the basic static structure.[4] Inside, the first staircase spirals up 184 steps along the tower wall and the columns to the 54,000-liter waste butanol container. Under the cylindrical shell there are oval and round windows from which a wide view of the city, the former ECW site and the Mulde floodplain is possible. A further 117 steps of a spiral staircase lead to the lantern under the top of the tower.[2][3]
