In 1972, the Amberg-Sulzbach district founded the national mining and industry museum in Theuern. Its most important task is to research, document and present mining and industry in the entire eastern Bavarian region.
The mining and industry museum is located in the Hammerherrenschloss, built in 1781. In addition, typical regional industrial monuments were transferred to Theuern: an iron hammer mill, a glass grinding and polishing plant, which has also housed the East Bavarian Electricity Museum since 1996, and a winding tower with a machine house.

        Hammerlock Theuern

A von Theuern family can be traced back to the end of the 11th century, which is also the first documented mention of Theuern. Hartnit from "Tiuren" appears as a witness in a document that was written down between 1092 and 1114.
A hammer mill probably only existed in Theuern at the end of the 15th century. In 1518 the Portner family acquired Hammerwerk and Hofmark. As early as 1682, a “hunter’s house” was built by Johann Georg Portner at the current location of the castle. In the course of the Counter-Reformation, the Portners were driven away from their Hammergut. After the Portnians, Andreas von Ruland's widow (1705) operated the hammer and since 1709 the Lochner von Hüttenbach family operated it.
According to the church register, the foundation stone for the late baroque castle that still exists today was laid on August 25, 1780; The builder was Joseph Christian von Lochner. The electoral master builder Wolfgang Diller from Amberg was won over to construct the Hammerherrenschloss. Several farm buildings were built as early as the 1770s, creating a four-wing complex around an enclosed inner courtyard. The east facade of the three-story main building is decorated with a central projection with a triangular gable. The Lochner-Bibra marital coat of arms is displayed in the gable field. Judging by the style, the massive main portal with pilasters and split gable comes from the hunter's house built in 1682. Inside, a salon on the first floor with carved rococo doors has been preserved from the former room decoration next to the staircase with richly carved railings. The castle is a plastered building with a half-hipped roof; an angled extension with a gable roof probably dates from the 19th century
On September 17, 1816, Karl Christian von Mann called Tiechler bought the Theuern estate from Countess Sophie von Hirschberg. In 1832 the local ironworks had a blast furnace. Von Mann's son sold the estate to Florian Dorfner on August 28, 1855. At that time it comprised 1,707 days' work, of which 1,561 days' work consisted of forests. In 1935, the Dorfner family sold the forest estate and castle to the Berlin timber wholesaler Breba. Today the property belongs to the Wittmann family.
Theuern Castle houses the East Bavaria Mining and Industrial Museum. In addition, the castle is used for numerous cultural events and entertainment.
