In 1936 the family moved into their house in Hemmenhofen. Otto Dix lived and worked here until his death in 1969 and increasingly devoted his work to the landscape of Lake Constance. In 2005 the House and Garden Dix ensemble was entered in the Baden-Wuerttemberg State Register of Monuments. In order to preserve the property in the future, it was acquired in 2010 by the Otto-Dix-Haus-Stiftung e.V. under the chairmanship of District Administrator Frank Hämmerle, renovated in accordance with historical monuments and equipped as a museum. In June 2013, the association handed over the MUSEUM HAUS DIX to the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, which has a globally significant collection of the artist's works.

A beautiful house and garden in a fantastic location. We were disappointed with the exhibition because we missed a mention of Dix's world-famous war pictures and expressionist works. (No life charts, only audio guide). It was also not clear to me from this exhibition why Dix was released in 1933 and why he was banned from exhibiting.
But the way to Gaienhofen was worth it!
