Everyone is Dead Except Us (2020), a new work by artist Ben Zegers, consists of two elegantly turned aluminum feet of 7.5 meters high and has been on the Binnenrotte since September 18. The feet refer not only to the origins of the city, but also to the ancient function of this place as a market: the two statues seem to be in dialogue with each other, like a customer and a merchant negotiating the price. The artwork was cast in parts by the bronze foundry Kemner in Cuijck. The feet are estimated to weigh around 1500-2000 kilos each. The aluminum has been finished in different ways. The raised heel and the rotation of the feet reinforce the spatiality of the artwork and give it a moving appearance that fits in with the dynamics of the market and the city. The well-known work by Edgar Degas, Petite danseuse de quatorze ans, from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen served as the model for the position of the two feet in relation to each other.
