A Zeesen boat, in Low German "Zeesboot" and formerly also "Zeesenerkahn", is a dimensionally stable sword boat up to 12 meters long from the time of sail fishing. The name is derived from the fishing gear used, the Zeese. The sailboat is built for relatively sheltered, shallow waters and is therefore well suited to the shallow Bodden waters. In fishing history, the distribution area of the Zeesen boats extended from the Ribnitz Lake through the Bodden chain of Fischland-Darß-Zingst via Hiddensee, Rügen, Strelasund and Greifswalder Bodden to the mouth of the Peene. Strongholds of fishing with Zeesen boats were the Hanseatic city of Stralsund and the area around the city of Barth. Today, Zeesen boats are mainly used as recreational sailing boats and for tourist purposes.
