The Stirling monument in Kronenberg (municipality of Horst aan de Maas) is a three-metre-high corten steel artwork. It consists of a column-shaped casing that represents a bullet/grenade/bomb shell. When you stand in this shell, you look out over the crash site. The silhouette of the bomber balances on top of the bullet shell. When you look up into the shell, you can read the names of the seven deceased crew members that are lasered into the steel of the silhouette. Inside the shell wall, the artist has placed a rose that he made from the aluminium remains of the aircraft. Seven loose rose petals fall down from this rose, representing the tears of sorrow for the loss of these seven young lives. The area in which the monument is placed is laid out in the shape of an omega sign. When you enter the area, you walk, as it were, over the runway to the monument that you can see through the white clouds. (4en5mei.nl/)
