On the southern fringes of the Cairngorms National Park is a mountain beloved to the folk of Pitlochry and, indeed, wider Perthshire. Hikes to Ben Vrackie take you to a distinctive pyramidal peak that stands proud and individual, a lone sentinel boasting splendid views of its distant neighbours. Ease of navigation and good paths mean that this is a great outing for the whole family, with very little technical difficulty.
An individual, isolated yet accessible peak that rewards with fine views
Walking routes to Ben Vrackie usually start in either Pitlochry in the south or Killiecrankie in the west and make use of good paths right up to the summit. A gorgeous lochan, Loch a’ Choire, nestles below its intimidating south facing slopes. Most walkers’ routes pass this way, traversing the dam before ascending to the summit.
A trig pillar marks the highest point, whilst a circular indicator dial allows you to match peak names to the skyline panorama. You’ll instantly be drawn to an awesome view west down the barrel of Loch Tummel towards pointy Schiehallion and to the north where the heathery peaks of Glen Shee rise majestically, in sharp contrast to the verdant fields below.
Blair Atholl and Pitlochry are both good bases, boasting a range of accommodation. There are plenty of superb spots for a wild camp, particularly by the loch beneath the summit slopes.
The north side of the massif is wilder and more remote with few paths to speak of. Solid hill-sense and a good level of experience is required to tackle the mountain from this direction. Winter conditions also require the experience of seasoned mountaineers with correct equipment.

Ben Vrackie, at 2,759 feet (841 m), is classified as a Corbett. It's significantly higher than the surrounding hills so you get great views, especially north into the Cairngorms and west down Loch Tummel. Most people walk it via the path from Pitlochry to the south. It's a great walk with between 2,000 and 2,600 feet (600 - 800 m) of ascent.

An easy walk until you reach the lochan then the going gets a little harder to the summit but well worth the views!!
