Wilten Basilica, Innsbruck
Spacious, rich in history, and patronizing, it is considered the most beautiful Rococo church in the country and, alongside the Premonstratensian Abbey Church, the second largest church in Wilten—and also home to the famous Wilten Boys' Choir: Wilten Basilica.
Hundreds of years ago, Roman legionaries are said to have venerated a unique image of the Virgin Mary at its site, the former "Veldidena." Remains of an early Christian church from the 5th century, found beneath the basilica, support this beautiful legend.
And one can clearly sense that the early veneration of the Virgin Mary continues to this day. For example, the image of the "Our Lady under the Four Pillars," a late Gothic sculpture beneath the ciborium altar, is still the destination of countless worshippers today.
