Leifeng Pagoda was originally built in the 10th century. During its history it has seen repeated devastation and rebuilds. Its most recent collapse was in 1924, after Japanese pirates that came up the river burned down the pagoda, and locals in the following years stole the bricks to grind it into powder for, as there was a superstition that the bricks would repel illness.
This newly built pagoda opened in 2002. The ruins and remains of the original pagoda are preserved underneath this new pagoda. It also has displays that explain the history of the pagoda, and prints of historical paintings and sketches.

Entrance fee (full price) to the pagoda is 40 RMB (as of July 2024). This includes the access to the pagoda and all displays, also usage of the elevators if you don't mind queuing. Alternatively you can also take the stairs. The top of the pagoda offers amazing views over the West Lake.
