Neuschwanstein Castle was built by the Bavarian King Ludwig II in 1869 and was never completed. Ludwig first experienced "Lohengrin" and "Tannhäuser". Later came "Tristan and Isolde", the "Ring of the Nibelung" and Wagner's adaptation of the legend of the Grail King Parzival ("Parsifal"), with whom Ludwig II identified in his final years and with whom Wagner identified him.

One of the most famous German castles, the Wartburg, had just been refurbished and restored in 1867 and became a direct model. In the 19th century, building in historical forms meant "perfecting" the old styles, also with the help of modern technology and the historical sciences. As a pronounced idealist, Ludwig II believed in such perfection like no other in his time.
