Snow on Ibiza? How the cathedral got its name:

The church's full name is "Catedral Santa Maria de la Nieves", in English "Mary of the Snow Cathedral". The name has its origins in the time when Ibiza was still under Moorish rule. The later conquerors signed a pact in 1234 in which they committed themselves to building a church dedicated to Mary in the event of a successful conquest.

The Christian conquerors were successful, and the conquest of Ibiza was successful on August 8, 1235. Now, in the Catholic Church, there are many well-known and less well-known Marian festivals. The Marian festival closest in time to the day of the conquest was Our Lady of the Snows. Hence the name!

Construction and development of the church:

The church is in a prominent location on the top of the old town hill. That is why the Moors built a mosque on exactly the same spot and it is assumed that places of worship were already there before.

After the conquest, however, it took a while before construction of the church began; there were more important things for the few available workers to do first. In the 14th century, the single-nave church was completed in the Gothic style. Around 400 years later, in the 18th century, the building was in need of renovation. In the course of the renovation, old elements were removed, so that the church is now considered to be Baroque in style.

The interior of the church:
The figure of Jesus in a glass coffin is striking directly behind the entrance on the right-hand side. Memorial plaques are attached in front of and above the coffin. Among them is one dedicated to Saint Cyriacus, whose construction began before that of the actual church. Construction began directly on the day of the conquest.
In the area behind the altar, the apse, there are five more chapels. It is striking that the chapels bear the names of saints, which are often found in other churches and, derived from them, in towns on Ibiza.
As was common in places of worship in the past, the dead were buried in the church. The deceased members of the noble families were buried in family crypts under the chapels in the nave.
The church has a bell tower. In the time before the fortifications of Ibiza were expanded, it also served as a watchtower.

The Diocese of Ibiza:
Ibiza was named a bishopric by Pope Pius VI on April 30, 1782. This raised the church to the rank of a cathedral. Less than 100 years later, in 1851, the bishopric was closed again for reasons of economy. In 1949 it was re-established, so that Ibiza is still a bishopric today.
