The "Gates of Cavallino," also known as hydraulic locks, were built in 1632 to connect the Venice lagoon to the Piave River (now the Sile).
These structures were essential to facilitate river navigation and the transport of goods between Venice and the hinterland, connecting the lagoon with routes to the northeast and central Europe. The complex of locks allowed the passage of boats through a system of locks, regulating the water level between the Casson canal and the Sile. Next to the gates there was also a customs building, used to control goods, which today is a historic tavern.
The locks represent an important testimony to Venetian hydraulic engineering and are immersed in an area of great naturalistic and historical interest, which can be explored through cycle paths along the local canals.
