The flood disaster of 1 February 1953 flooded large parts of the southwest of the Netherlands. Almost 100 dikes broke, costing 1836 lives, 200,000 hectares of land were flooded, thousands of animals drowned and many houses and buildings were damaged or destroyed.

That was then. Much has been done since then to make the Netherlands safe, but flooding can still happen. The story of then and now can be seen in the Flood Museum: the ‘National Knowledge and Remembrance Centre Flood 1953’.

The Flood Museum is located in the enormous caissons that were used to close the last breach in the dike at Ouwerkerk after the flood disaster in 1953. The museum is located in a special creek area that was formed by the disaster.
The Flood Museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00
