The Melsungen Castle was built from stones from the Schwarzenberg robber baron castle and today houses, among other things, the tax office ;-).
    Very beautiful castle garden.

The Melsungen Landgrave Castle was built between 1550 and 1557 as a hunting lodge for Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous.
It served as the seat of Landgrave Moritz the Scholar from 1627 to 1632. After that, the castle was the garrison of the Landgrave's cavalry and in the last century it housed the Hessian Forestry Academy. Today the castle serves as an administrative location for the district court and the tax office.

After passing a small farmyard to the west of the castle, you reach the castle park with its old trees and the castle pond. On the left side, you can see an impressive remnant of the old city wall, which is overlooked by a round tower (built around 1400). During the Hessian summer holidays, the castle garden is transformed into a beer garden with a cultural and musical program for a few weeks.

Opposite the castle is the former stables. Built in 1577 by Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse-Kassel. During the Thirty Years' War, the stables temporarily housed 50 to 60 horses. The building shows the large Hessian coat of arms from 1577, set off in color. Today it is the seat of the district court. The group of figures with the goose girl in front of the building is a reminder that Melsungen used to be a farming town.

Note: The castle garden and the inner courtyard are freely accessible, but the castle and stable rooms cannot be visited!!
