The other cross mentioned by Apitsch in Rossbach is no longer there, it was lost in the 1960s when the new post office was built. At that time it stood between the estate of Richter and Hundhammer.
Say: 1. It is said to have been erected in memory of an officer who died there in single combat. When the cross was straightened years ago, spurs are said to have been found when digging up the earth. (Alberti 1897)
2. The legend reports that two knights had dueled at this point and that the bones of the slain lay under the cross stone. Excavations by Gustav Jacob (former landlord of the "Gasthaus zur Deutsch-Austrian border") have shown that this legend is just a legend. (Apitzsch 1932)
In a later edition of Apitzsch's "Wo auf hoch Tannenspitzen" (4th revised edition from 1941) one can read:
"...a knightly duel took place at the stone cross in the Kaiserhammer. They stabbed each other and were both buried on the spot. This happened several centuries ago. Three or four decades ago a few men from the Kaiserhammer dug up the stone cross and searched for human bones, for weapons or other treasures. They found nothing. Out of high spirits they laid an old, rusty saber under the stone that had been put back in place. One of the treasure diggers told me. Later local researchers and treasure diggers will rack their brains be artificially constructed in a legend"
