The route for bikes skirts the bottom of the fort instead of heading straight over it, so you're in for a steep climb, but if you've got the time it's well worth poking your nose around. Little remains of the fort itself except for the substantial earthern ramparts – but even if you decide to press on, the views are fantastic.

This was on the last leg of the King Alfred’s Way for me and was one of the few descents in the whole trip i walked, dry conditions but on a loaded gravel - the descent was more treacherous than i was prepared to risk / but amazing views from the top and a fast through the fields ride from the bottom.

Epic ride but so tuff I didn't know how brutal the South Downs Way was, get training if your going to do it Ladies and Gents, thoroughly enjoyed the experience though, Second leg coming soon!!

The panoramic views are worth the effort expended getting up there. Note the climb is on chalk, which will be very slippery in the wet.

The approach to Winchester Hill from the south, following the sign posts “South Downs Way“ leads you to a very steep section, shown on Kahoot as steps. Recommend avoiding and using the Kahoot recommended route to the north.
We (2 X 75-year-olds on E bikes)
Approached Winchester Hill from the south and found it extremely difficult even to push with the walk feature engaged.
However, just managed Winchester to Chichester within battery capacity starting at 44 miles .
