Old Court, Sulz, relics from the 13th century
The romantic courthouse - also known as the blacksmith's house - is one of the few relics from the 13th century and has been preserved in its original state. The stone base with the mighty barrel and cross vaults and the column elements made of sweet chestnut and oak have stood the test of time. The Old Court is a very special building due to its size and striking architecture. A characteristic landmark in the townscape of Sulz and unique in the surrounding area. For this reason, it was also listed and carefully restored from November 1982 to November 1986.
On closer inspection, you can see that the house - as it appears today - was built in two stages and was extended at a later time, probably after 1600, with a knitted extension. The walls of the extension made of horizontal wooden beams are made using the so-called head-knitting technique. In contrast, the front, older part was constructed as a block-post plank structure with dovetail joints.
The load-bearing parts are made of oak and chestnut wood. This early wood construction technique only existed in this region until 1500, and this house is probably the only one that has survived.
The cross and barrel vaults of the cellars, which consist of four rooms and have walls up to 2.50 m thick, were probably built in the 8th century from stones from the nearby Frutz, sand and lime, according to local historian Prof. Ilg, based on their construction values. They probably first served as a toll station, tavern and horse-changing station, because the Frutz torrent, which divided the Rhine valley, had been forded here since ancient times.
The foundation walls had to be partially underpinned, and the plaster in the large vault was renewed. The wine cellar was left in its original state. Only the dilapidated stairs had to be renewed. The rooms were returned to their original basic form. The old double-panel doors and the wooden ceilings, as well as all wooden parts and supporting elements were cleaned of the various colors and dirt and then treated with beeswax and linseed oil over months of work. The roof area covers 1480 m2 and was re-covered with four layers of fir wood shingles (20x60 cm).
