      The Höltigbaum nature reserve is a former military training area with a history. The border between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein runs right through the nature reserve.
      The nature reserve was designated on the Schleswig-Holstein side in 1997, the Hamburg side followed a year later.
      For many decades, the areas were used extensively without the use of fertilizers or pesticides - which is why rare animal species such as red backed killer and crested newt as well as plant rarities such as broad-leaved orchid and centaury can still be found here today.
      In terms of landscape, it offers the visitor a varied pasture landscape with trees and bushes.
      The information center "House of Wild Pastures" offers exciting events all year round, including guided tours of the bird species that occur in the area and meditative hikes where participants can find peace in nature.
      Those who prefer to explore the approximately 560 hectare area themselves can hike the wild pastures with their four-legged landscape keepers, especially shaggy Galloway cattle and cute sheep, on circular paths of various lengths.
      The natural history museum "Haus der Wilden Weiden" in the middle of the nature reserve is always worth a visit.
      Here hungry hikers can fortify themselves in the small café before or after the tour.
