    Sandstone trough

This trough, which weighs around 3 tons, was made over 300 years ago from high-quality "Britter sandstone". Its original location was in a biotope on the current connecting road (dam) between "Weiherfeld" and "Mettlacher Straße", on the left-hand side below the gardens when viewed from Mettlacher Straße.

Fed by the water from the springs bubbling there, it was used primarily by the residents of Mettlacher Straße as a place to wash their clothes and bedding, and by farmers as a watering hole for their livestock and to clean their used potato sacks. It was also a welcome playground for children with the Steinrauschbach stream flowing past.

The construction of the dam road between "Weiherfeld" and "Mettlacher Straße" seemed to seal its end! But it is thanks to the attention of the then forester of the von Boch forestry administration and later mayor Hubert Kulke and his wife Bertha that this sandstone trough was preserved for posterity. After it had adorned the entrance area of her house with flowers since 1976, Mrs. Bertha Kulke donated this relic of the past to the IG "Dorfarchiv Hausbach" in 2022, with the mediation of Karl-Heinz Lang.

On the occasion of Mrs. Bertha Kulke's 100th birthday on May 6, 2023, this sandstone trough was returned to its original purpose, supplemented by a water inlet carved from "Britter Sandstone". The two smaller troughs previously served as a manger in the stable of a local farmhouse.

The fairy tale of the sandstone trough

Once upon a time there was a huge, colorful sandstone trough.

For millions of years it had been baked together from all the endless grains of sand. It slumbered contentedly under the high forest up in Saarland. One day men started to scratch at it with spades and pickaxes, crowbars and all kinds of iron tools.

Then it was shaken by a huge blow - a meter-sized chunk had been blown out. Hard-working hands began to hammer and chisel away at the square piece until, after many days, a beautiful, very large trough had been created. With much hooting and whooping, it was carted down into the stream valley. Craftsmen pulled an iron pipe over its head and cool water bubbled into the belly of the good trough. Animals came, stuck their thirsty mouths in and trotted home full.

People came, very small ones, who cheered around it, even crawled into it, and big men and women who scooped water or swung laundry in it. So our sandstone trough soon became the center of attention. The joy of its new existence did not last long, however. Fewer and fewer people and animals came, because pipes and cables had made it superfluous. Very sadly, it cried its tears into the reeds below. All the little frogs and toads and the many other animals tried to comfort it with their soft calls. The reeds finally took pity on it and gradually covered it up. Then, a long time later, when the moon had been replaced by many electric lamps, a huge machine drove up, grabbed it with its mighty arm, lifted it up like a spring, swung it around, squeezed it so that it shattered and set it down roughly on top of the mountain. There the good trough stands today, kind people look after it, planting colorful flowers in its body.
