The church was founded around the year 1400 as a daughter church of the church of Zweeloo. The church included two vicaries, one dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament and one dedicated to Saint Anne.[1] In earlier times, the church building was connected to the now separate tower. Part of the nave may have been killed in the fighting during the siege of Coevorden in 1592. The hole that was made must first have been temporarily closed before the current west wall was built in 1628. The choir was originally higher than the nave, but the nave was also raised to choir height when the west wall was built. This difference in height can still be seen in an old attachment of the roof of the nave to the tower. The current church consists of three bays, of which the two eastern ones formed the former choir. This choir dates from the 15th century and is probably younger than the remainder of the nave. The church was plastered in 1862.
