The Oberhof was built in 1569-71 on the orders of Count Georg von Ysenburg-Ronneburg for his wife Barbara von Wertheim, whose dowry secured the financing of the building project. One reason for the construction of the residential building was the division of Büdingen Castle in 1529 between the two main lines and the further division of the Ronneburg half between the brothers Georg, Wolfgang and Heinrich, so that Georg no longer had a share in the castle. Another reason was that the expansion of Meerholz Castle into a residence failed due to objections from the nearby town of Gelnhausen. The building was intended to serve as a joint residence for the owner and his wife. In 1959, the town of Büdingen took over the Oberhof. The dilapidated property was renovated for 9 million euros and is now the home of the music and art school. The "horse stable" and the "little hall" are used for a wide variety of cultural events such as readings, concerts and art exhibitions.
