During the Second World War, one of the largest prisoner of war camps of the German Wehrmacht was located here. Around two million Soviet prisoners of war, but also French, Polish, Yugoslavian and Italian prisoners, made their painful journey through the "Stalag (main camp) Senne 326 VI/K".

After the camp was liberated, former prisoners erected, among other things, the approximately ten-meter-high obelisk in memory of the Russian soldiers (inscriptions in four languages).

The first Soviet war dead from Stalag 326 were buried in the Catholic St. Achatius community cemetery (Stukenbrock-Senne). Just a few weeks later, the camp cemetery (now the honorary cemetery of Soviet war dead) was created on a neighboring site.

Between 1941 and the liberation of the prisoners of war (April 2, 1945), a total of 36 rows of mass graves were created. Each row is about 110 m long.

After the liberation, a small group of survivors erected the obelisk. They also made 36 memorial stones with inscriptions. One memorial stone stands at the beginning of each row of mass graves.

The fence around the cemetery was also built by the liberated prisoners of war. Former rails from the lorry railway that led from Hövelhof station to the camp were used as metal supports for the wooden paneling at the time.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Ehrenfriedhof was converted into a park-like cemetery and thus received its current appearance.
