The Neptune Fountain in Legnica is one of the oldest and most striking fountains in the city—a Baroque gem steeped in mythological symbolism and urban history.
🧜‍♂️ Historical Background
Origin: As early as 1588, a fountain featuring the figure of the goddess Ceres stood on this site, fed by the city's water system via the water tower on the Młynówka River.
Destruction: The original fountain was destroyed in city fires in the 17th century.
Baroque Redesign: The current Neptune Fountain dates from 1731 and depicts the sea god Neptune with a trident and three dolphins at his feet.
📍 Location & Significance
Located between the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and the Old Town Hall—right in the middle of the Market Square (Rynek).
Together with the neighboring Mermaid Fountain, it forms an ensemble of Baroque fountain art in Legnica.
A popular meeting place and photo opportunity, especially on hot days when the water provides a pleasant cooling effect.
🛠️ Restoration
The Fontana Neptuna underwent extensive renovations in 2010 to preserve its artistic and functional qualities.
