    Also called "Great Church".

Here you can also find the Christmas market in the area.

The people of Bremerhaven simply and plausibly call their seafarers' church from 1855 "Great Church", because the red neo-Gothic brick building is still one of the tallest buildings in the city centre.

A church was initially not planned in the founding city plan of 1827, and it was only decided in 1842 to build it. However, the first attempt at construction in 1846 failed due to the soft marsh soil. In 1853, according to the plans of Simon Loschen, who also designed the old lighthouse , 552 posts were driven into the ground in order to build the three-aisled hall church with apse and west tower. The building was made of red brick and decorated with colored glazed clinker bricks, the side facades received Gothic pointed arches. The church building shows many medieval details, but is designed according to classical principles. The ceremonial inauguration by Mayor Smidt took place in 1855 (source: bremerhaven.de/de/tourismus/architektur-denkmaeler/bgm-smid

Good starting point for emblematic hikes from Bremerhaven

The Mayor Smidt Memorial Church in Bremerhaven belongs to a congregation of the Uniate Churches consisting of Lutherans and Reformed people.
Belonging to the Bremen Evangelical Church from the beginning, it is still the only parish of this regional church in Bremerhaven.
The correct name of the "Great Church" is United Protestant Congregation for the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church.
Since 1927, Bremerhaven's main church, like the main shopping street (“Die Bürger” for short), has been named after Mayor Johann Smidt.

Nice place in the middle of the pedestrian zone. The market is also held here.

In Bremerhaven it is only called the "big" church.

                    Traduzido por Google •

This seafarers' church was inaugurated in 1855 after 2 years of construction. In 1944 the church burned down completely. In 1960 the reconstruction was finished.

Interesting, big, striking and somehow fitting to the Bremerhaven market. If you're ever in Bremerhaven, you can't miss the Memorial Church, as it is very centrally located at the shopping center, the airlift from the new port, Weser dikes and market square.

There was no church planned in Bremerhaven's city plan from 1827. In 1842 it was decided to build a church. However, immediately after the foundation stone was laid in 1846, the project failed because the inadequate foundations sank into the soft marsh soil. Seven years later, a second attempt was started under the direction of the Bremen architect Simon Loschen. For this purpose, 522 wooden stakes were driven into the ground. The construction of the three-aisled church, the apse and the tower then began.

The neo-Gothic three-aisled building was decorated with colored glazed clinker bricks and had Gothic pointed arches on the side fronts. The church was divided into seven bays using buttresses. In contrast to the roof turret, the branch towers were rebuilt. They stand on a 5 cm diameter round iron rod on the eaves wall. Some of these round metals had suffered from the weather and had to be replaced around 2010. Some sandstone parts were also replaced.

The church was consecrated in 1855.
The church tower was added in 1870 and, with an impressive height of 80 meters, it was also a landmark for shipping.
The unusual spire is modeled on the Freiburg Minster.
In 1944 the church was destroyed except for the tower.
In 1960 the rebuilt church was consecrated again.
The church from the inside makes a simple impression.
White walls and a gray floor covered with stone slabs.
