The garden architect Erwin Barth received his gardening training in Lübeck and Elmshorn and completed it in 1900 at the Royal Gardening School in Potsdam-Wildpark. He then worked for private clients. In 1908 he became a city gardener in Lübeck, where he stayed until 1911. In 1912 Barth went to Charlottenburg (a district of Berlin since 1920), where he was city garden director until he was promoted to garden director for the whole of Berlin in 1926. He also taught at the Charlottenburg University of Technology from 1921, where he was appointed honorary professor in 1927. In 1929 he left the city garden office and became full professor and director of the Institute for Garden Design, which was set up as Germany's first scientific training center for garden architects at the Berlin Agricultural University.

Erwin Barth's parks, city squares, green spaces, hospital gardens and cemeteries in Berlin were created between 1912 and 1929. They still shape the cityscape today and have been restored in many cases in his spirit since the 1980s.

From 1912 onwards, Erwin Barth designed the five public gardens Dernburgplatz, Goslarer Platz, Karolingerplatz, Kuno-Fischer-Platz and Mierendorffplatz in Charlottenburg alone. These facilities and later also the Lietzenseepark (1919/1920), Sachsenplatz (today: Brixplatz ; 1918-1921), the green spaces in the former Luisenstädtischer Kanal (1926), the Jungfernheide People's Park (1920-27), the Rehberge People's Park (1926-1929 ) and the often stately private gardens bear witness to Barth's work. In all of his works he combined the sophisticated beauties of garden art with a high leisure and recreational value.

Erwin Barth did not create decorative gardens just for “walking around,” but rather green oases - even in densely built-up parts of the city of Berlin - where children found protected open spaces and adults found places to relax.

Erwin Barth took his own life in connection with the phenomena of the Nazi dictatorship. His grave in the Wilmersdorf forest cemetery in Stahnsdorf was declared an honorary grave.
