The name Burgplatz refers to the Pleißenburg castle that stood here at the time. Burgplatz is the youngest of Leipzig's inner-city squares, having only been built around 1900. After being largely destroyed in World War II, Burgplatz is now once again a lively urban square with no gaps in the buildings. The New Town Hall, the Town Hall, the Bauwens House, the Deutsche Bank House and the Burgplatz Passage are all located here.

The Burgplatz is considered the newest square in the historic old town. It was only created around 1900, when the Pleißenburg was demolished to make room for the construction of the New Town Hall for the growing city.
