"The ruins known as the "Marstall" date from the first half of the 13th century and are the remains of the former stables of Hochep-pan Castle. The word "Marstall" comes from the Old High German "marah" (horse) and "stable". Closely related to the expression "Marstall" is the word "Mar-schall". Like the Italian "mares-calco" and the French "maréchal", this is derived from the Old Franconian or Old High German "marahscalc", which is made up of "marah" and "scalc" (servant). In Merovingian and Carolingian times, the word "marshal" referred to the king's stable master, who in the Middle Ages was so highly respected because of the importance of the cavalry that he eventually took on military leadership roles.
As early as the 10th century, the marshal was one of the four highest officials, together with the steward (responsible for food), the cupbearer (for drinks) and the chamberlain (for the treasury), not only at the courts of kings and emperors, but also of several bishops of the imperial church. From the middle of the 12th century, these four court officials are attested in the entourage of local princes and lords, including in the region: in the case of the Counts of Morit-Greifenstein, the Counts of Tyrol and the Counts of Eppan.
For the Eppan-Hochep-pan branch of the family, they are not documented in the sources, but their existence at the court of the Counts of Eppan-Ulten is certain. An Ulrich, the progenitor of the Schenk von Altenburg, is known as the cupbearer of Count Friedrich I of Eppan-Ulten († 1184) and in 1231 of his grandson Utrich II. A chamberlain named Konrad, who possibly belonged to the Lords of Kaltern, is known in 1208/10.
Ulrich I of Girlan, the progenitor of the Fuchs von Fuchsberg, is mentioned in 1231 as the steward of Utrich II of Eppan-Ulten, and a marshal of the same count, a certain Berengar, from whom the later lords of Vasio may have descended, is attested in 1238."
