    The monastery church of St. Maria is part of the overall complex of the Zinna monastery, which was founded in 1170 by the Archbishop of Magdeburg Wichmann as a Cistercian monastery. On May 15, 1226, the few parts of the building that had been built up to that point were consecrated. After further construction steps in the 13th century, the crossing, the north cross arm, the sanctuary and the central nave received their ribbed vaults in the first half of the 14th century. After the Reformation, the last abbot and the remaining monks left the monastery in 1553. In 1590, the now Evangelical Lutheran archbishop appointed the church as a branch church of the St. Nikolai Church in Jüterbog to provide pastoral care for the village of Zinna. From 1897 to 1900, Heyl repainted the church in the neo-Gothic style.
    Further renovations took place between 1993 and 2009. Finally, the state of Brandenburg and the federal government carried out an extensive restoration in 2016/2017, which cost around one million euros. After the work was completed, the church was inaugurated again with a ceremony on June 25, 2017 by the Protestant Bishop Markus Dröge.
