This striking bronze sculpture, "Wisent," by Georg Hartje, dating from 1959/62, can be found at Berliner Straße/Hindenburgstraße in Rendsburg.
The powerful body of the peacefully grazing wisent exudes a monumentality, which the sculptor further enhanced through exaggeration and simplification of form. The lowered head creates an arched silhouette characterized by large surfaces and a few, gentle lines.
The primitive figure stands in a strange contrast to its location between commercial buildings on a busy, wide street and thus also serves as a warning, as the animal was already acutely threatened with extinction in the 1920s due to human hunting and the loss of habitat. Through massive efforts by zoos and private individuals, a small population has been kept alive to this day.
Another version of the sculpture has stood in Dortmund's Westfalenpark since 1959.
