Several times Freyenstein has been destroyed in military conflicts. In 1287, it was decided not to rebuild the city at the old place, but then relocate it to the northeastern adjoining lowlands. The city area was now only half as large and could be better defended by a water-bearing moat. What remained of the old town was an abandoned settlement, which today is called a "desolate" place. Only a few such systems have been preserved in Germany. They allow unique insights into the earlier appearance of a medieval city. The old town offers good conditions, even if above-ground today almost nothing reminds of this place.
