For centuries, Kripp was an important towing station. Horses pulled the ships upstream from the bank. Johannes Brus has erected a monument to the heavily used working horses at this location. He reverses the working conditions of the time by freeing his bronze horses from any load and letting them rest in peace on a concrete boat.

About the work

With his sculpture "Treidelpfad" on the banks of the Rhine in Remagen-Kripp, Johannes Brus refers to the history of this place. Kripp was an important tow station between Cologne and Koblenz before steamships replaced the traditional towboats in 1860. For centuries, the ships were pulled upstream with the help of horses.

Horses are a recurring motif in Johannes Brus' sculptural and photographic work.

Towing was a great effort for the horses. The animals often went blind due to the reflection of the sun in their left eye. The constant lateral pull of the rope made them lame. Johannes Brus now reverses the working conditions in his sculpture. His horses are on the deck of a concrete boat, one looking upstream, the other downstream, freed from any burden.

Horses are a recurring motif in Johannes Brus' sculptural and photographic work. Since the mid-1970s they have appeared in his photographs, in reference to Franz Marc's Blue Horse. Later, however, they broke away from this context to become sculptures: as horses made of concrete - solid and immovable, occasionally coated with the powder paint of the famous Yves Klein-Blaus (International Klein Blue). From time to time a rider is added to the sculptures. Sometimes the horses are small and delicate, even miniatures. Recently, Johannes Brus has also had them cast in bronze. They all carry stories and encounters, as is the case with the work "Treidelpfad". The history of the place provides the perfect breeding ground for Johannes Brus' artistic interest in turning his beloved subject into a sculpture again. The work was realized in collaboration with the engineer Christian Pettersen.

Johannes Brus was born in Gelsenkirchen in 1942. He lives and works in Essen-Kettwig.
