This neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1907 by the parishioners of Berbroek under the leadership of pastor Jan Huydts. The reason for this was an existing chapel that had to be demolished. The materials for the construction of the chapel and its transportation costs were paid by Max Dompas. The valuable 16th century statue that stood in the old chapel was housed in this new chapel. This was a polychromed statue of an upright Virgin Mary with child Jesus on the left arm and a scepter in the right hand. The 57 cm high statue, estimated to have been made in Mechelen between 1550 and 1560, was stolen on Wednesday, March 27, 1974 around 10 p.m. After the theft, the statue was replaced by a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The name “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” comes from a Byzantine icon of the same name. The icon has been in Rome since 1499, where it can still be seen in the Sant' Alfonso di Liguori Church. In the Eastern Orthodox Church this image is known as “Theotaokos of the Passion” which means “Godbearer of the Passion”. This name indicates that Mary was not only the Mother of Jesus of Nazareth, but also the Mother of God. On the occasion of the restoration of the chapel in 2017, the Our Lady of Lourdes statue was replaced after 43 years by a woodcut inspired by the original icon. The woodcut was made by Kozak Maxim from Lviv (Ukraine). The renewed blessing took place on September 10, 2017.
