                          Saint Matthias is one of the twelve apostles from the inner circle of Jesus' disciples, but unlike the others, he was not called to this office by Jesus himself. After Jesus was handed over by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed for the Holy Spirit and elected a new twelfth apostle. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Matthias in Trier, which is the only apostle's grave north of the Alps, and a number of Saint Matthias brotherhoods (SMB) make regular pilgrimages there.
