St. Tönis originally belonged to the parish of St. Mary's Birth Kempen and initially had no church. This changed in 1380, when the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III of Saarwerden, approved the construction of a chapel and the creation of a cemetery in St. Tönis in a document dated September 10th. The chapel, built in the 1390s, received a bell tower in 1483. In 1554, the church's affiliation with Kempen ended, St. Tönis became an independent parish and the chapel also became a parish church.
