It was the sensation of the year! The whole city was upside down in the spring of 1891 when Buffalo Bill moved into the city with his 200 performers and almost as many animals to trigger a true cowboy and Indian mania among the citizens of Karlsruhe for four days with his Wild West Show .
Between April 23 and April 26, 1891, he gave eight performances in Karlsruhe "on the meadow on Durlacher Allee near the slaughterhouse".
The enthusiasm of the people of Karlsruhe for the spectacle was so lasting that western groups formed in the years that followed and in 1927 the "Indian Fountain" was built on Werderplatz.

The fountain was developed, designed and installed on eastern Werderplatz between 1924 and 1927 in collaboration between the master builder Friedrich Beichel and the sculptor August Meyerhuber with the participation of Otto Feist. The main sculpture shows a double face with a serious Indian and a smiling Friedrich Beichel himself. A man from the Sioux tribe, who was performing with the Krone Circus in Karlsruhe at the time, is said to have been the model for the striking Indian face.
