    Morella is the most beautiful medieval hill town in the hinterland of the Valencian Mediterranean coast. The town is located at almost 1,000 meters above sea level, near the passes that separate the communities of Valencia and Aragon. This strategic location led to its expansion into a fortified border town in the 14th century with a 2.5 km long town wall and the mighty castle on the boulder towering over the town.
    Up here, surrounded by an imposing mountain landscape, the summer temperatures are bearable. In winter it can get freezing cold, especially when the mistral blows from the northeast.

    Sights and attractions in Morella

    There is a large car park on the northern outskirts of town; the vehicle should be parked here. From there it is not far to enter the historic old town through the city gate Portal de Sant Miquel. The mighty gate with the two octagonal towers tells of more than 750 years of history.       On the castle hill

      Access to the Castell de Morella is through the former monastery of Sant Francesc. The path leads through the ruins of the cloister and the monastery church. During the ascent to the 1,074 m high castle rock, the mighty and high walls of the fortress accompany us. At the same time, there are always beautiful views of Morella and the surrounding area.
      The next stop is the Palacio del Gobernador. The palace was built in front of a cave and serves as a small museum on the history of the castle. The Castell de Morella was created in the Moorish era and later expanded under Christian rule. Via steep stairs we reach the summit of the castle complex with the Plaza de Armas and an aljibe, the water tank of the fortress that is essential for survival.
      From up here we experience a wonderful panoramic view of the mountain landscape of El Maestrat, which forms the border between Valencia in the south and Aragon in the north.
