The 20th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment Prince Franz was founded on September 20, 1896. The regimental staff with the 1st Battalion and the regimental music was relocated to Lindau on April 1, 1897. The new troops moved into the Max-Josef Barracks on Ludwigstrasse and the Lindenschanz Barracks (Paradiesplatz 2, today a branch of the tax office). The 2nd Battalion was based in Kempten. The 3rd Battalion was in Landsberg and was relocated to the newly built Luitpold Barracks in Lindau in October 1903.

Due to the expansion of the garrison, more offices and casino rooms were now required. The city of Lindau decided to demolish the venerable "Binderzunft building", on the upper floor of which the offices and the officers' casino had previously been located, and replace it with an impressive new building designed by the city architect Egg. This building was given the name “Abel Building” (Brettermarkt 8) due to the significant financial grant of 30,000 marks made by Major (ret.) Maximilian Ritter von Abel, a campaign officer in the Royal Bavarian 3rd Infantry Regiment “Prince Karl of Bavaria” in 1870/71 and honorary citizen of the city of Lindau since 1896. During the construction of the Luitpold Barracks, the regiment’s offices were located for over a year in the so-called “Pfisterhaus” or “Baumgarten”, the house on Marktplatz No. 4, and the officers’ casino was set up in the Hotel Reutemann by the harbor. On March 1, 1903, the new offices and casino in the “Abel Building” were ready for occupancy. The grand opening ceremony took place on March 12, 1903, the birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold.

The III. The 3rd Battalion was stationed in the Luitpold Barracks until the end of the First World War in 1918. This was followed by the Reichswehr, which had stationed the 9th and 11th Companies of the 3rd Battalion of its 19th Infantry Regiment there until 1935. When the Wehrmacht was formed, the 3rd Battalion of the 99th Mountain Infantry Regiment was also temporarily based in the Luitpold Barracks. During the Third Reich, pioneer units of the German Wehrmacht, which were trained there as landing pioneers, were also stationed in Lindau, as was the 488th Infantry Replacement Battalion, which was formed in 1939.
