    The Palace Garden ('Paleistuin') is one of the hidden gems of The Hague. This romantic park with flowerbeds, fountains, hedgerows and ponds lies directly behind the Paleis Noordeinde. The inhabitants of The Hague gather daily in this quiet oasis. On warm days, adults seek shade under the trees, play with children in the grass, and enjoy loving couples for a picnic in the park. Paleistuin Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

        Frederik Hendrik, son of William of Orange, had the Palace Garden built at the beginning of the seventeenth century for his mother, Louise de Coligny. The park was then called the 'Princess Garden' and was full of romantic flower beds, ponds and fountains and marble statues.
        After the departure of the French in 1813, the Princessetuin with the Noordeinde Palace came into the hands of the Dutch state, after which it was managed by the Government Buildings Agency. Between 1813 and 1940, the garden was at the disposal of the users and residents of the palace, the successive kings of the House of Oranje Nassau. It is during this period that the name 'Palace Garden' first came into use at the expense of the old name. In the 19th century, the entire garden was redesigned according to the insights of the English landscape style. The garden was also surrounded by a wall at that time.
        It is now, by Dutch standards, an ordinary park, and accessible from sunrise to sunset via the Prinsessewal. The garden is closed only when there are important guests at the palace.
