It was built on the site of the War of Independence fortress between 1871-1877 to protect the southern entrance to the city, as an integral part of the new fortification system. It was built according to a medieval sunken Italian system. It is surrounded by a dry ditch with external downspouts. The fort blocked the road to the city from the south, ensuring that some members of the system were in mutual fire communication with each other. When completed, the construction of the huge fortress system in Komárom was completed. It got its name from the nearby villages of Nagyigmánd and Kisigmánd. Its dimensions are much more modest than the Monostori fortress: it has 106 rooms, a useful floor area of 4,600 m2, a built-up floor area of 6,200 m2, and a built-in volume of more than 33,000 m3. The principles of its design are the same as the Fortress of Monostori.
