Within the urban project of Alberico I Cybo-Malaspina, the fountain of Mercury is the most representative element of the Hermetic ideal. Alberico wanted to mark the new city, Massa Cybea, with a strong urban symbol that was part of his personal thought, which Massa still preserves. Among the fountains of Massa, therefore, we find that of the Mercury built in1566, which occupies the center of the site of an ancient well, hence the name Piazza del Pozzo. It consists of a large round basin with thick rims, fed by two opposing spouts, arranged at the bottom of a knotted pyramidal structure with a square base, above which stood the statue of the god Mercury. The image of Mercury was colossal in size, depicted with arms outstretched in a broad allocating demeanor. The fountain has undergone numerous changes from the end of the eighteenth century, the layout of Albericia has completely changed. Due to an earthquake new changes were made to the fountain from 1770, a marble column was pulled above it which collapsed, so the next year she papers another one from Carrara met above the statue of the deity. The square that takes its name from the divinity of the fountain, the god of exchange and trade, became a meeting point between the old and the new city, in fact the square was dedicated to trade and, as in the Renaissance, it became enclosed by stately buildings and adorned with a centrally located fountain.
