As early as around 1800, when the first spinning machines, still powered by horse-drawn yokes, were procured for the Scheidt Brothers cloth factory, the factory owners were already planning a new factory on the Ruhr. The Göpel operation was unsuccessful. As early as 1804 it was reported that several horses and oxen were driven to death in the Göpel.
A factory on the Ruhr was able to use the water power of the river course, but it was only realized in 1837 by Julius Scheidt. Chimneys on old factory views refer to the use of steam engines. A high factory building was erected parallel to the Ruhr, which now dominated the south-western view of Kettwig. After major fires in 1880 and 1902, the partially destroyed buildings were rebuilt. A hydroelectric power station equipped with three turbines was added to the south side with the reconstruction of 1902. Due to the expansion in the decades up to 1910, the factory plant stretched up the slope to the Ruhrstraße, including the Villa Scheidt (Ruhrstraße 91), enthroned high above the Ruhr.

Today there are condominiums in the building.
