    The English Cemetery is an exceptional memorial to the dead of all the shipwrecks that occurred in the waters off Golfo Aranci. We are located behind the small beach of Cala Greca , the picturesque sandy beach which can be reached by land in a few minutes, past the gentle promontory behind the better known Cala Moresca . In front of the access to the beach, the path leads to the so-called “English Cemetery” where, according to legend, the bodies of English sailors who were shipwrecked at Cape Figari found eternal rest. The reality, however, is that among those crosses is only one soldier in Her Majesty's Navy who died of malaria in June 1900 aboard the ship Vulcan - as evidenced by the large Celtic cross hanging over the hill. The other buried sailors (5 graves) were instead Italians who lost their lives in the sinking of the Ligurian sailing ship " Generoso II ", gathered in Cala Greca and buried here in 1887, while six other graves concern the bodies of as many Golfoarancini. Unfortunately, the names and the exact place of burial have been lost.

    The cemetery fell into disuse around 1930, when it was decided in Golfo Aranci to bury the dead in Olbia. It is still fairly well preserved and has a walled tombstone erected in 1891 to the north by the crews of the Navigazione Generale Italiana, which then operated the Golfo Aranci – Civitavecchia shipping company to commemorate the five Italian sailors, and to the south by the large Celtic cross over the grave of the English navigator. There is also a small stone altar and some floral decorations. The whole is fenced (free access) and marked with a special multilingual sign.

      Continuously visited by people, especially on sunny and warm spring days, the cemetery houses 13 tombs, a small altar and a pyramid-shaped parallelepiped, just over a meter high, surmounted by two juniper trunks nailed to form a cross. On the north-facing side of the pyramid there is a marble tombstone placed in 1891 by the crews of the "Navigazione Generale Italiana" (the company that then managed the Golfo Aranci - Civitavecchia shipping line under concession) to remember the five sailors who perished in the shipwreck of the Ligurian sailing ship "Generoso II", collected on the shore of the Cala Greca sea and buried here in 1887. What misleads them is the large Celtic cross, placed on the tomb of a soldier of the navy of her Britannic Majesty, which, being the largest and the only clearly legible, stands out above all the other small and anonymous crosses of the cemetery. No one knows that the sailor who is buried there is the only Englishman buried there, the others are Italian sailors who perished in various shipwrecks that occurred over the years of the past centuries.
