The Fish Fountain dates from 1693 and was placed by the city council to provide the traders on the fish market with clean water for hygiene purposes.
Two water reservoirs on the Burcht supplied the Fish Fountain with water via a connection under the Nieuwe Rijn.
Jacob Roman, city architect of Leiden and court architect of William III, designed the fountain.

The fish fountain has been located along the Nieuwe Rijn since 1693.

The fountain was placed in its current location in 1693 and is the first public fountain in Leiden. The special design of the fountain was designed and created by Jacob Roman, a well-known sculptor and architect.

At that time, the water in the fountain came from a water cellar under the castle. Archaeologists found a connection between the water reservoirs in the castle hill and the fish fountain.
