Trinity Church (1955/59) on the Market Square - Worms 🚴‍♂️

The Trinity Church (full name Reformation Memorial Church of the Holy Trinity) is the largest Protestant church in Worms. The Baroque hall building is centrally located on the city's market square and is now a listed building.
After the city was destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession, the foundation stone for the Lutheran city church was laid in 1709 on the site of the destroyed Mint House. At the time, it was mistakenly believed that Martin Luther had defended his writings here at the Diet of Worms in 1521. In fact, this actually took place in the Bishop's Court (now Heylshof Park), a few hundred meters away. The church was built – with the input of all 3,000 residents at the time – as an expression of the city's Lutheran faith and was based on the motto "Thus God places me on this spot where Luther once proclaimed his word." Designed by the Electorate of the Palatinate, Captain-Engineer Villiancourt, the church was consecrated in 1725 as the "New Evangelical Main Church in Worms, To the Holy Trinity." The proposed enclosure of the church by two buildings for the town hall and school was not implemented. The interior design was based on St. Catherine's Church in Frankfurt am Main, which the Worms magistrate had become acquainted with during their exile in Frankfurt.
On February 21, 1945, the church – along with large parts of the city center – was heavily damaged in a British air raid on Worms. Of the original Baroque building, with its rich woodwork and paintings, only the perimeter walls, the lower part of the tower, and the west portal with a double-leaf, finely carved wooden door with symbolic depictions of the Trinity survived the firestorm. The church was rebuilt from 1955 to 1959. The exterior was largely restored, while the interior was given a modern design. 🚴‍♂️
