      In the Middle Ages, known as "Piazza delle Erbe", it was the site of the market, butcher shops and jousting tournaments. It underwent modifications in the 16th century on the western side, following which it assumed its current elliptical configuration with arcades, and in 1921, when via IV Novembre and via Garibaldi were enlarged and the Arco dei Magnani was demolished.

      It was once called Piazza Grande, Piazza S. Antonio and then Piazza Giulio Cesare: only during the Second World War was it renamed Piazza Tre Martiri, in memory of three young partisans who were executed here on 16 August 1944.
      Going around the square in a circular way, we find buildings with a modern style, on which the bulk of the sixteenth-century clock tower stands out, others of a religious nature (the Church of the Paolotti and the small temple of S. Antonio) or even more historic, such as the Colonna of Julius Caesar. The latter is a Renaissance memorial stone erected in 1555 to celebrate the famous phrase that Julius Caesar addressed here to the soldiers of the XIII legion after crossing the Rubicon. Until the Second World War, the "petrone" on which Cesare climbed to deliver his speech, of which there is no longer a trace, was placed above the column.
