In the middle of the square is the statue of the writer, professor and politician Giuseppe Montanelli. The square was renovated in 2019 and was a candidate for the Tuscan Architecture Award. Here social life takes place, events, markets and the Palio di Fucecchio take place. In 2021, Fucecchio was the arrival town of the second stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The square was originally known as “piazza d'armi” because it was used for the training of the Grand Ducal troops.
