Forst (Lausitz) was one of the leading (East) German textile towns until 1989.

View of the Brandenburg Textile Museum - Daniel Noack's former cloth factory, a dark red brick building with large industrial windows.

The Textile Museum preserves this tradition. It is housed in a listed factory complex dating from 1896/97, a clinker building ensemble in the style of Wilhelminian industrial architecture, which still characterizes the cityscape today.

Tracks from the old Forst industrial railway have also been preserved in and around the factory yard.

Production took place here until 1992, before the Textile Museum opened its doors in 1995. Since then, visitors have been able to watch cloth production in all its stages, from the wool to the finished fabric, and even try some of them out for themselves.

On display were both handcrafted tools and functioning historical machines, including carding machines, spinning and twisting machines, self-factories, and various looms.

The museum closed for three years in 2021 for extensive renovation and expansion.

A new exhibition concept will embed the exhibition in the social, economic, cultural, and ecological contexts of textile production starting in 2024. Significantly expanded, the new permanent exhibition will also present the regional history of Eastern Lusatia and the history of the city of Forst, including the topics of "coal"—the curse and blessing of Lusatia—and water use along the Neisse River.

A special highlight will be the new locomotive shed for the "Schwarze Jule" (Black Jule)—the last surviving locomotive of the 1893 Stadtbahn (city railway). On loan from the Dresden Transport Museum, it will now be permanently on display in Forst, albeit currently in temporary accommodation.
